Skills Recognition

Recreational Skipper's Ticket

Skills Recognition & Equivalents

The Department of Transport recognises specific commercial, interstate and overseas qualifications as equivalent to the Recreational Skipper’s Ticket.

You may not need to obtain a WA Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (RST) if you hold a:

  • valid and current skipper’s ticket from another state or country that is equivalent to the RST, or
  • commercial marine deck certificate of competency.

If you hold an equivalent qualification, it needs to be recognised by the Department of Transport (DoT) before you can skipper a recreational vessel in Western Australia.

Check to see if your qualification is recognised as equivalent ->

If you are visiting Western Australia for 3 months or less and you hold a valid and current skipper’s ticket or boat licence from another state or country, you do not need to obtain an RST.

If you intend to stay 3 months or more you will need to get an RST.
